Getting around Russia: Yandex Maps, Yandex Go and the apps that work

The map and taxi apps you already have on your phone aren't the local stack here. Yandex Maps and Yandex Go are — Russia's own mapping and ride-hailing apps, and the ones that actually work normally across the country. Both run a full English interface, so this isn't a workaround you're settling for; it's the standard toolkit, just switched to your language.

The two apps you need

Yandex Maps is your navigation layer: offline maps you can download in advance, live metro and bus schedules, and in-app taxi ordering built right in. Yandex Go is Yandex's dedicated taxi and delivery app — taxis, food and grocery delivery, all in one place. Between the two you can navigate any city, order a ride and get dinner delivered to a hotel room without speaking a word of Russian.

Both apps work in English: open Settings → Language in either app and switch it before you arrive. Same app locals use — no separate "international" version to track down.

Ordering a taxi without speaking Russian

Open Yandex Go, drop a pin on your pickup point and your destination, and the app shows you a fixed price before you confirm — no negotiating with a driver, no language needed at any step. Payment happens in-app. This is the same mechanism locals use every day, which also means fair pricing: no "tourist rate" a driver improvises on the spot.

Install before you land, not after

Download both apps and pre-load offline maps for your cities while you're still on home Wi-Fi. Two things work against you if you wait:

The fix is the same one that solves the rest of your connectivity kit: get the eSIM and both Yandex apps installed and opened at least once before you fly, then lean on hotel Wi-Fi if the mobile block is still active when you arrive.
